Bareges/La Mongie

The ski area covering the linked resorts (via the famous Col du Tourmalet) of Bareges (west side) and La Mongie (east side) is the largest in the French Pyrenees. The ski area can be reached from Chez Passet within 50 minutes and parking is at the slopes on both the La Mongie side or the Bareges side. La Mongie is a purpose built resort comprising apartments, bars and ski hire shops and will never win any prizes for its architecture, however what it lacks in aesthetics, is more than made up for in the skiing!

The details of the skiing are as follows:

Total ski area 100 kms comprising;

  • Green Runs 23
  • Blue Runs 19
  • Red Runs 21
  • Black Runs 6

Altitude 1400 – 2500 meters

There is also a floodlit piste to allow night skiing at La Mongie.
A snowboard park on the Bareges side has just been built.

Daily Ski pass (2006/7) 25.00 Euros

There are plenty of restaurants on the slopes (five from memory) to cater for all tastes and budgets. There are also plenty more restaurants in La Mongie itself.

For those wishing to experience the ultimate in downhill skiing , it is now possible to ski down from the Pic du Midi. This Pic du Midi is reached by two cable cars (outwith the normal ski area). It stands at 2872 meters and can onle be skied with a local guide. The run down from the top is all off piste and it is possible (if you are up to it) to ski the Pic four times in one day!
